| Description: | This pietra dura brooch of a flower spray is made by cutting in pieces of pink and white coral, turquoise and other semi-precious stones into a black surround, in this case probably basalt, and then sanding over the top. This technique is a continuation of that practiced in Italy since Roman times in jewellery, floors, furniture etc. Excavations of Roman sites inspired an archiological revival of this and other themes.The frame is of classical design, 19th century and 18ct gold.Size 3.2 x 3.8cms |
